Kingdom of Meges

Meges was the leader of men from Dulichium and "the sacred Echinae, islands, where men live across the water from Elis" (Iliad, 2.625-626). These lines have been extensively debated in antiquity, and to the present. The consensus view is that the Dulichium of the Catalogue was Lefkada, and that the Echinae were the little islands between Lefkada and Astakos on the mainland, with a couple of exceptions (e.g. Oxia) further south towards Elis. The islands were largely uninhabited, or could ony have supported small communities. Between the time of the Catalogue and the homecoming of Odysseus, the Dulichians may have been dislodged from Lefkada and have have moved south to Meganisi, Ithaca, and Cephalonia (Samos). The videos shows some photographs of and on Lefkada, and the Echinae from the mainland and along the ferry route from Astakos to Ithaca.
